spoonful of homemade ranch

In my house, we are all about the sauces, dips, and dressings! They truly can change an entire meal and sometimes you just need a little extra “something” to take a food from basic to delicious. We go through entire batches weekly because it’s delicious and so easy to make!

Ingredients Needed

This jalapeno ranch recipe is also very flexible. With simple ingredients used to make this from scratch, I feel great serving this with so many meals as opposed to bottled ranch from the store! Take a look in your fridge today and you may already have what you need to add a little flair to your meal.

  • Sour cream – Use regular or low-fat sour cream based on your preference. Sour cream adds a nice creamy base to the dressing. If you’d like another low-fat version with added protein, try plain Greek yogurt as a swap.
  • Mayonnaise – Use your favorite mayonnaise to bring a rich flavor to the ranch dressing. Use a regular, light, olive oil blend, or other variation that suits your taste.
  • Lime juice – Fresh-squeezed lime juice is ideal for freshness, but bottled lime juice will work too if you have it on hand! If you like, lemon juice or vinegar will also work as a simple substitute.
  • Homemade Ranch Seasoning – I’m a huge fan of homemade spice blends to season your foods and easily create sauces and dressings! Mix up a few batches of my homemade ranch seasoning and keep it on hand in your pantry for a quick dip or dressing. If you already have it prepared, it’s such an easy step to mix up your own sauces and dressings at home.
  • Jalapeno pepper –  Remove the ribs (white inner pieces) and seeds and roughly chop up 1 jalapeno pepper. You will blend ingredients later so it doesn’t have to be perfectly diced. If you’d like more spice, include a little bit of the ribs and seeds to the blended mixture.
  • Water – As you blend the ingredients, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time as needed to reach the consistency that you’d like.

How To Make Jalapeno Ranch Dressing

Once you see how easily you can make delicious homemade ranch dressing, you’ll never go back to store-bought!

Tip: If you already have my homemade ranch seasoning ingredients mixed up, this will be an even faster process! I suggest mixing up a double or triple batch for future recipes.

All you need to do is:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor.
  2. Blend until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon of water at a time until you reach just the right consistency.
  3. Store in a sealed container in the fridge until you are ready to use it. It will stay fresh for 4-5 days!

Storage of Homemade Jalapeno Ranch Dressing

When you store dressings and sauces in the refrigerator, it is important to be sure they are in an airtight container. One of the best ways to do this is in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. This helps prevent any permeation of smells or impact on flavor that can sometimes happen with plastic containers.

Refrigerate your jar of jalapeno ranch in the fridge for up to 4-5 days – if it lasts that long! This dressing should not be frozen due to the combination of ingredients.

Equipment

  • blender or food processor
  • glass storage container with tight-fitting lid

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon Homemade Ranch Seasoning
  • 1 jalapeno pepper roughly chopped with ribs and seeds removed
  • Water add 1 tablespoon at a time as needed to reach desired consistency

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor.
  • Blend until smooth, adding 1 tablespoon of water at a time until reaching desired consistency
  • Store in sealed container in fridge until ready to use

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of spice by using less jalapeno pepper or add more along with a bit of the ribs and seeds in the mixture. For reference, I use one jalapeno (without the ribs and seeds) and I don’t find it spicy at all.
  • Store in the refrigerator in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Dressing cannot be frozen, but can be refrigerated for up to 4-5 days.
  • For a dairy-free version, swap the sour cream for plain dairy-free yogurt and use my version of ranch seasoning mix without buttermilk powder.

Jalapeno Ranch Dressing FAQs

  • Can this recipe be made vegan? You can also adjust this recipe to fit vegan needs! To make it vegan, use an unsweetened and unflavored dairy-free yogurt – coconut milk or cashew milk yogurt will work. Also, swap regular mayo for vegan mayo to eliminate the addition of eggs.
  • Is this recipe gluten-free? This ranch recipe is gluten-free! Add it to all of your favorite gluten-free dishes for added deliciousness.
  • Can this recipe be frozen for later use? I do not recommend freezing this recipe to use later. Due to the dairy content and added lime juice, it will not defrost well without separation.
  • Can this recipe be made with no mayo? You can always blend up the ingredients in this recipe without mayo, but the taste and consistency will be slightly different. Your results will be more similar to a dip.

  1. I often use organic greek yogurt in place of sour cream, (far fewer calories). Do you think it would work for this recipe?

    1. yes! I actually sub out greek yogurt in this recipe often. And when I’m trying to be really good I do mostly greek yogurt and just a little squeeze of mayo. It does change the taste a bit but is still very tasty and much more guilt free 🙂

  2. We really need a dip recipe for this one….

Maybe something using the cheesy buffalo chicken dip recipe as a base…

Mix the taco seasoning with ranch for a cool nacho casserole. . .

    SO Many possibilities….
