Easy Homemade Steak Seasoning
Looking for a steakhouse-quality seasoning that will hit the mark on flavors every time? This homemade steak seasoning is the solution. Not only does this create super-flavorful steak, but it will also work with lots of different meats!
When I can, I prefer to make my own seasonings since I can adjust the flavors and include only the ingredients I need. Homemade seasonings are also generally a budget-friendly option since you can buy spices in bulk and mix up several batches at a time. Whether you’re grilling, pan-searing, or roasting, this mix will take your meats to the next level!
Is this recipe the same as Montreal steak seasoning?
This steak seasoning recipe and Montreal steak seasonings are both used with a variety of meats and cooking methods. They differ slightly in the ingredients which change the boldness of various spices.
Montreal steak seasoning typically includes more garlic – either powder or granulated – and herbs such as dill and coriander seed. It is also a bit spicier since it usually includes some form of red pepper flakes, and it is used often in marinades.
My steak seasoning recipe is a more all-purpose blend. It has ancho chili powder and smoked paprika which bring a deeper, earthy flavor with a hint of smokiness. The easy recipe works with lots of different beef recipes!
Ingredients Needed
- Kosher salt – The coarse texture of kosher salt adheres to the steak and really helps to bring out the flavor. It is essential for steaks and meat rubs!
- Black pepper – You can use regular ground pepper or a coarse grind if you like.
- Garlic powder – A hint of garlic works well in just about every seasoning blend.
- Smoked paprika – Even if you’re not using the grill, smoked paprika includes a hint of smoky flavor.
- Brown sugar – Brown sugar brings a slight caramelization to the meats that are seared and cooked at high temperatures. The texture also is perfect for packing the seasoning to the surface of the steak.
- Ground mustard – Ground mustard helps tenderize meat and adds a layer of complexity to the overall flavor.
- Ancho chili powder – Ancho chili powder is just ground, dried ancho chile peppers. They are fairly mild, but smoky. You might find this spice also labeled “ancho chile pepper” or “ancho chili powder.”
- Dried thyme – Be sure to use dried thyme, instead of ground thyme, for texture and extra earthy flavor!
Note: This blend will have a smoky hint from the ancho chili powder and smoked paprika. If you prefer a less smoky blend, you can substitute regular chili powder and regular or sweet paprika.
How To Make Homemade Steak Seasoning
In just a few minutes, you can have a batch of the best steak seasoning stored in your pantry and ready to go. While you’re at it, make a double or triple batch to save for your next grilling or roasting night!
- Simply measure and mix all the spices together.
- Store the seasoning blend in an airtight container such as a jar or other tightly sealed lid.
Best Ways To Use Homemade Steak Seasoning
This simple steak seasoning works for any cut of steak that you love! It will also flavor your meat perfectly regardless of the cooking method.
To use the seasoning, generously rub or pat it on the surface of the meat and allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes before cooking. The amount of seasoning will vary based on the size of the meat or the number of servings, but this recipe will provide plenty for a roast or several large steaks.
Use steak seasoning on your classic ribeye or T-bone, brisket, Slow Cooker Bottom Round Roast, or juicy, flavorful hamburgers.
Storage Instructions
Keep steak seasoning stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry location. I like to use glass jars because not only do they keep the seasoning fresh, but they also won’t absorb the flavors. They always wash well to reuse for the next seasoning blend!
Be sure that your storage container is completely clean and dry to prevent added moisture into the blend. Store for up to 6 months.
