Ingredients

What is chuck roast?  Chuck roast is a cut of meat from the shoulder and/or neck area of the cow. Its connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, etc.) dissolve during the slow cooking process, making the meat very tender–provided that it isn’t overcooked. In short, chuck roast is the preferred cut of meat for the slow cooker.
What can I substitute for the wine? If you don’t have any wine or prefer not to use it, you can swap the wine for extra beef broth instead.

Do I need to add salt to my beef? In a word, YES! Adding salt to your slow cooker while cooking beef allows some of the meat’s moisture to be drawn out and then reabsorbed, thus making the beef more flavorful. If your herb and garlic seasoning doesn’t have any salt, you’ll want to add 1/2 teaspoon to the slow cooker while the meet is cooking. (Check the label.)

How do I know when my Shredded Beef is done? Beef is fully cooked when it shreds easily and reaches an internal temperature of 205 degrees F. Use a meat thermometer for best results.

Pro Tips

What’s the best way to shred beef? The jury is still out on the “best” way to shred meat. Most everyone has their favorite method. I like to use two dinner forks to pull the meat apart and separate it. Some like to use their electric hand mixer to make quick work of the shredding process. A friend of mine likes to use her potato masher with a twisting motion to complete the task. The choice is yours!

Will Shredded Beef turn out right if I cook it on high for a short time? No, it won’t be as tender. The meat needs to cook slowly in order for the connective tissue to break down and tenderize the meat. If cooked on high, your Shredded Beef will be dry and tough.
