I’ve had this post on my “to write” list for a long time, but every time I sit down to do it, I sort of freeze up. Not so much because I don’t know what to say, but because I have so much to say. I am a self-proclaimed spice junkie and actually recently reduced my stash from 3 whole drawers to 2. Except for the fact that my number of jars has been creeping up again and now I have an extra basket in my party for the overflow. I suppose that kind of defeated the purpose.
So, if I love spices so much, why am I having such a hard time writing this post? Well, I think I’ve determined that I just couldn’t figure out a good way to get all that information crammed in here. So you know what just finally occurred to me? I shouldn’t. What I should to is break it down and if you guys find spices as interesting as I do, we can keep this up as a series. So today, I will give you the run down on the most basic spices I think you should have. (Already have a stocked cabinet? Check it out and see if you agree or would have more suggestions.) Future topics will include how to make spice blends and when to use dried vs. fresh herbs. And really…anything else you guys want to know about spices, so be sure to send me your questions, suggestions or share your knowledge with the group! I think it safe to say we all love to learn about cooking here!
Let’s jump right in and start with the basic list of spices I would suggest having on hand. If you have these basics, you can create so many recipes and they happen to be the ones I use most often in my recipes. I love spices because they add so much flavor, depth and customization to dishes without adding fat or any bad stuff. Without listing the obvious salt and pepper, here is my list of spices to stock your basic spice cabinet. A couple of quick things to note… 1. I have used various brands with success 2. I find them on-line or at the grocery store 3. I have included Amazon links here for your reference but be sure to consider size/cost in determining what you need for your spice stash.
That’s it! My top ten list of spices you will want to keep stocked in your pantry, cabinet or drawer. With these on hand, you can make so many things including tacos, curries, meatballs, meatloaf, burgers, pasta dishes, the list just goes on and on! What do you think? Do you have these spices? Or do you have others you would not want to live without? Make sure to leave a comment or send me and email and let me know!
And now that we have those basics out of the way, it frees me up to go crazy, right? Next up, spice stores and specialty spices. Do you guys want to hear about this? Here is a little preview of a trip Amy and I took to Penzey’s. (<—– no affiliate link here, just true love). They have stores throughout the country and you can also order from them online. We had a blast and it’s safe to say I will be a repeat (repeat) customer.
